Jazzart performs in Beautyfull

Following its resounding success in 2008 and 2009, Beautyfull, choreographed and directed by Ina Wichterich, showed at the Baxter Theatre last week.
Jazzart’s very own newly appointed artistic director, Jackie Manyaapelo, as well as company dancers Refiloe Mogoje and Phindile Kula, featured in this stunning piece of art. Also featured in this collaboration was leading South African integrated dance initiative Remix Dance Company and South African Circle of Dance Academy.

September (Company) Season - iHaw' Elisha

This September, Artscape Theatre plays host to the premiere of iHaw’ Elisha, choreographed by Sbonakaliso Ndaba for Jazzart Dance Theatre. This “theatrical tribal potion” was first seen by Johannesburg audiences at the 2010 FNB Dance Umbrella as Ndaba’s commissioned work-in-progress, ‘1st Draught’.

iHaw’ Elisha traces the chess game that is life, playing it back as snatches: our ways of seeing and doing, our gestures, our natures, our vices, our virtues. As we peel off our outside layers, we are left bare in the real world: tender, exposed and beautiful.

An exploration of the complexities of humanity, this work was praised as ‘powerful’, ‘striking’ and ‘hypnotic’. Ndaba and the Jazzart dancers weave magic for Cape Town audiences once more as they recreate their ritual with “… images and sounds – of bodies engaged in such focussed intensity, moments of incredible calm and stillness and moments of grinding speed, it doesn’t seem possible a human can move that fast.” – Tammy Ballantyne: Artspoken

DANSCAPE 2010

Jazzart Dance Theatre this year plays host to youth arts organisations which have been integral to the enduring success of DANSCAPE since it began in 1999. The Jazzart team, in conjunction with these young artists, will create a montage of works that celebrate their contributions, and the contributions of all those who have guided Jazzart on its journey to this point.

Directed by Jacqueline Manyaapelo and featuring CAFDA 34/10, Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre, Tertia Kindo Arts Project, Jikeleza Dance Project, Vadhini Indian Arts Academy, and WCED Arts and Culture Focus Schools, Danscape 2010 will offer a taste of the future wonder she will inspire with the living legacy that is Jazzart Dance Theatre.

PARTLY GOD

Following a number of successful Jazzart colloraborations with theatre directors like Mark Fleishman of Magnet Theatre, eminent South African theatre director, writer and producer Lara Foot Newton was engaged to direct a multi-disciplinary repertoire work that will premiere at Artscape in Cape Town on 16 October 2009.
The production will centre on research conducted by Lara and her team into conflict and violence. They will explore that which is unspoken. A silent language which begins to occupy the space between words and conveys lived memory ... the language of speechless terror. The production encompasses a landscape of reality and violence as well as a dreamscape, a magic space where everything is possible.
PARTLY GOD offers a dreamscape of poetry, music and dance. The narrative is seen through a boy soldier ,who befriends a young man searching for his father. Their relationship is co-dependent and delicate, and the boy finally offers a path to enlightenment.
Empathy then allows for transcendence which, in turn, offers a state of grace, thus supporting the notion, that we are all - PARTLY GOD.
